1968 USA
Tommie Smith and John Carlos ran the race of their lives.
Olympic medal winners in the 200-meter, Smith taking gold, and Carlos, bronze, both men raised their fists as the Star Spangled Banner honored their country. They'd worked their entire careers to get to that moment – but on the podium they risked it all and stood for something bigger than themselves.
More than 50 years later, that silent gesture still echoes as one of the great moments of protest and solidarity in our nation's history.
